ATC & Radio Support

The Air Traffic Control and Radio Support Service at Vnukovo International Airport is a division of the Moscow Center for Automated Air Traffic Control which in its turn forms part of the State Unitary Company “State Air Traffic Control Corporation”
The Service includes over a hundred highly qualified and skilled experts, air traffic controllers, engineers and radio technicians all working together to ensure air traffic safety and dispatch reliability in Vnukovo’s take-off, landing, maneuvering and numerous apron areas by means of quality radio support of all the flight operations at the Airport requiring such.
The air traffic services provided at Vnukovo International are rendered in both Russian and English with the share of flights served in English enjoying rapid and steady growth. And this is precisely the reason why the Vnukovo ATC and Radio Support Service has been consistently at work to improve the level of command of radio exchange English by its staff of air traffic controllers. It also has much to do with the new standards in language command by both the flight crews and ATC ground staff that are being introduced following a resolution to this effect passed by the ICAO (International Civil Aviation Organization) Assembly. Thus by the year 2008 each air traffic controller at Vnukovo shall have to be certified as possessing the level of command of ATC radio exchange English no lower than that of 4 on the ICAO scale.
Vnukovo Airport has always been popularly known as the formal gateway to Russia. It is here that the flights carrying foreign heads of state and official delegations land and take off almost daily. This circumstance places a particular responsibility on the in-house ATC and RS Service, which is handled with finesse by our expert staff possessing invaluable and vast experience in handling VIP flights.
Currently there’s a vast renovation and capital construction program proceeding apace at Vnukovo International. The entire airport complex with all its services and divisions as well as the work ethos and philosophy are undergoing a radical transformation. As part of this concerted renovation effort, the ATC and RS stands to receive some state-of-the-art equipment including an all-new ATC tower with equipment to match. New equipment supplies shall be broad in range and include among other items, ATC radars, an airfield scan radar, a new ILS (Instrument Landing System), very high frequency omnidirectional range (VOR) and distance measuring equipment (DME).
The basic approach to ATC workstation organization shall also change to conform to the international standards in the field. All of these innovations shall prepare the ATC and RS for the expected growth in air traffic at the Àirport and will enable it to function smoothly and coherently ensuring the flight safety and ICAO category III meteorological minima certification and rating of the Airport.
